In the event of a fire:-
- Call emergency services.
- Tackle fire only if safe.
- Isolate fuel and battery if possible.
- Secure the area, keep people away.
Fire Extinguishers
Vehicles must carry:- (dry powder or equivalent)
- 2 Kg for engine or cab fire.
Plus
- Up to 3.5t gvw a second 2 Kg for tyre or vehicle fire.
- Up to 7.5t gvw a 6 Kg.
- Over 7.5 Kg gvw a minimum of 12 Kg in total.
If the load is entirely infectious substances (6.2) only the 2Kg extinguisher is required.
Types of Fire Extinguisher
Water
- OK for solid fuels.
- Low cost.
- Can freeze.
- Not suitable for flammable liquids or electrical.
- Messy.
Foam
- OK for solid fuels and flammable liquids.
- Not suitable for electrical.
- Can freeze.
- Very messy.
Powder
- General purpose use.
- Doesn’t cool the fire.
- Can clog up.
- Very messy.
