Carbon Dioxide
  • General purpose use.
  • Will not clog or freeze.
  • Not for use in confined places.
  • Expensive.
Halon
  • Not permitted on Dangerous goods vehicles.
All extinguishers are coloured red. Tyre fires re-ignite, they need cooling. First Aid
  • Do not become a victim yourself.
  • Assess the area.
  • Put on barriers (gloves etc).
  • Send for help if it looks required.
  • Don’t move casualties unless necessary.
  • Do not give anything to eat or drink or smoke.
  • Check casualty for response, tap on shoulder.
  • Any response implies breathing and heartbeat.
  • Check for bleeding.
  • Monitor casualty often for any changes.
If no response:-
  • Lay flat on their back on the ground and tilt head back to open airway.
  • Check for breathing, look at chest to see if its rising and falling. If not start CPR.
  • If breathing put in recovery position.
  • On their side
  • Head facing down, but tilted back to maintain airway.
  • Cover with coat / blanket to keep warm.
Severe Bleeding
  • Apply direct pressure to the wound with anything clean, do not remove it, add to it as necessary.
  • Elevate affected part if possible.
